(Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images)On Thursday, seven Kentucky players announced their intentions to leave school early and enter for the 2015 NBA Draft. Of that contingent, freshman forward Karl-Anthony Towns is projected to be the first player selected, possibly as high as the No. 1 overall pick. This afternoon, Towns posted on his Instagram the five-page handwritten thank you note he composed to the university, his teammates and coaches and the members of Big Blue Nation. It’s very heartfelt and definitely worth the read. He even included a postscript from his alter-ego Karlito. Towns is a “one-and-done” player with the talent level of a college senior and the maturity level of an NBA veteran. Incredibly classy gesture on his part.last_img read more

Michigan Fans Are Now Rooting Hard For Virginia Tech To Upset Clemson

first_imgThe Michigan Wolverines student section and marching band during the college football game against the Michigan State Spartans.ANN ARBOR, MI – OCTOBER 17: The Michigan Wolverines student section and marching band during the college football game against the Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Stadium on October 17, 2015 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)Virginia Tech is hanging in with Clemson, down 21-14. The Hokies have the support of many Michigan fans right now.Last night, Michigan fans threw their support behind Colorado, hoping the Buffaloes, who the Wolverines beat in September, would knock Washington out of the College Football Playoff race. That didn’t work out. Washington crushed Colorado 41-10, likely stamping its Playoff ticket in the process. Now, the hopes of the maize and blue fall on the Virginia Tech Hokies, a significant underdog to last year’s national runner-up Clemson in the ACC Championship in Orlando. With a win, Clemson would likely be out, opening up a spot in the field. Of course, Wisconsin or Penn State could jump Michigan with a Big Ten championship, but Michigan is currently ahead of each of those teams in the rankings, and holds a head-to-head win over both. After the rankings release on Tuesday, selection committee chair Kirby Holcutt said that the debate between No. 4 Washington and No. 5 Michigan was the most contentious thing the committee discussed, and the margin between the two was extremely thin.Hocutt: Committee spent almost 2 hours (!) the last 2 days on Washington vs. Michigan. “A lot of committee members were really struggling.”— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) November 30, 2016Hocutt: “The separation between Washington at No. 4 and Michigan at No. 5 is extremely small.”— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) November 30, 2016If true, there seems to be a shot of Michigan, and not the Big Ten champion, taking the last spot, but that is still contingent on Virginia Tech pulling the upset. Former Michigan center Elliott Mealer is all-in on Justin Fuente’s squad.Michigan fans on Twitter are cheering on the Hokies as well.Come on Virginia Tech, get Michigan on the college playoffs!— Kenny Hartwick (@KennyHartwick) December 4, 2016Really hoping Virginia Tech can keep this up.— Michigan Nation〽️ (@UMich2016) December 4, 2016rooting for #VirginiaTech right now because Michigan #GOBLUE #Theresstillhope #CFPlayoff— Charlie Lapastora (@charlielap) December 4, 2016I’ll buy a Virginia Tech shirt if they beat Clemson and Michigan gets into the playoffs— Corey Ortiz (@Corey__Ortiz) December 4, 2016The College Football Playoff turns fan bases into very strange bedfellows.last_img read more

Mane targets improvement to 26-goal haul

first_imgSadio Mane recorded 26 goals in 2018-19, landing the Premier League Golden Boot and Champions League crown, but he believes he can get even better for “special” Liverpool. The Senegal international was among those to thrive for Jurgen Klopp’s side last season in what turned out to be a memorable campaign.A return to the winners’ enclosure was made in European competition, with a seven-year wait for major silverware ended in some style. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Mane played a leading role in that success, while his 22 efforts in the Premier League saw him top the scoring charts alongside club colleague Mohamed Salah and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The bar has been raised by the talented 27-year-old, with personal bests set, but he is confident that there is still more to come as he seeks to remain on an upward career curve.“To be honest, I think I improved a lot in my finishing,” Mane told Liverpool’s official website.“It was positive because I can say I improved every season, which is important in my development. I will try to work harder and harder to get better and better.”If Mane can continue to shine, then there is every chance that the immediate future will deliver more top honours for Liverpool.“We have a great, great team,” added Mane.“The future can be exciting, for sure. We’ll try to do everything to create something special.”Sadio Mane Liverpool Champions League final 2019It is not just the players that will have an important role to play in the pursuit of honours.Mane admits that a loyal fan base have also helped to inspire confidence and lift Klopp’s side to even greater heights. He said: “They played a big part in the season.“[There were] very difficult games at home and they were always here. Keep on going because we need you! It’s very important.“It makes the club special and it’s really important. Sometimes it can be a bad day and if the fans give you more motivation, it’s positive for the team and for them as well.”The likes of Mane and Salah have more competitive action to come at the Africa Cup of Nations this summer, but the vast majority of Liverpool’s squad are counting down the days to pre-season and the start of a new Premier League campaign which will open with a home date against Norwich on August 9. Report: Brazil 3 Peru 1

first_imgGabriel Jesus threatened to turn from hero to villain but his Brazil team-mates sealed a 3-1 win over Peru at the Maracana and a ninth Copa America title.Tite’s men beat their final opponents 5-0 during the group stage but were under pressure when Peru skipper Paolo Guerrero cancelled out Everton’s opener with a 44th-minute penalty.Jesus, whose excellent wing play laid on Brazil’s first goal, restored the advantage in first-half injury time. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare That set the five-time world champions’ on course for their first major honour in 12 years, although a clumsy aerial challenge on Carlos Zambrano was enough to earn Jesus a second yellow card and set up a fraught finale – until substitute Richarlison dispatched a final-minute penalty to spark buoyant celebrations.Peru began confidently before Brazil hit the front in the 15th minute.Jesus got the jump on Miguel Trauco with a clever run before jinking around the full-back and crossing for Everton to finish gleefully on the half-volley.Everton turned provider shortly afterwards as Philippe Coutinho shot wide from 10 yards and Roberto Firmino headed narrowly over in the 36th minute. They were misses the Selecao would regret when referee Roberto Tobar upheld a harsh handball call against a prone Thiago Silva on review and Guerrero levelled from the spot.Peru’s joy was short-lived, however, as Zambrano’s ill-timed slip allowed the razor-sharp Jesus to steal in for a cool finish.GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL DO BRAAAAASIL!GABRIEL JESUS COLOCA O BRASIL NA FRENTE! 2 x 1  | #JogaBola #CopaAmérica #BRAxPER pic.twitter.com/XGDcddOapR— CBF Futebol (@CBF_Futebol) July 7, 2019Coutinho fizzed a curling effort fractionally wide six minutes into the second period as Brazil pushed to increase their lead.Jesus was shown remonstrating in tears on steps inside the stadium tunnel after his fifth foul of the game strained Tobar’s patience too far.Edison Flores sent a rasping strike wide before the action became unhelpfully fractious as far as Ricardo Gareca’s men were concerned.Zambrano then erred once more, bundling Everton over, and Richarlison was on hand to land the final blow. What does it mean? Brazil finally taste glory as Neymar looks onEver since his emergence as a wonderkid at Santos, this has been the era of Neymar for world football’s most celebrated international team. However, this first Copa since 2007 comes on the back of failed 2014 and 2018 World Cup campaigns. The former humiliation on home soil has now been exorcised, albeit with the stricken Paris Saint-Germain star on the sidelines. All three final goalscorers would probably have had reduced roles had Neymar been around and how he fits into such a well-drilled and efficient outfit under Tite from this point on will be intriguing.Jesus red should not overshadow huge step forwardThe Manchester City striker was indebted to his team-mates in the end, but they kind of owed him one. Having scored one and created another in the semi-final win over Argentina, Jesus repeated the trick and looked a player reborn in international colours. The 22-year-old’s scoreless outing at Russia 2018 and an often-testing season at club level felt like distant memories.Zambrano slips up at the wrong timeThe last time Jesus saw the Peru defender on the turf it was, of course, bad news for the man in yellow. But Zambrano’s woeful error at precisely the moment Brazilian nerves were jangling could scarcely have come at a worse time. The needless foul to concede the late penalty summed up his outing.Key Opta facts- Brazil have won the Copa America on each of the five occasions they have hosted the tournament (1919, 1922, 1949, 1989 and 2019). – Tite is the first coach to win the Copa America (2019), the Copa Libertadores (with Corinthians in 2012) and the Copa Sudamericana (with Internacional in 2008)- Gabriel Jesus is the first player to score a goal and be sent off in a Copa America final- Peru’s goal ended Alisson’s streak without conceding at 889 minutes in all competitions. The previous time he was beaten was in action for Liverpool, Salomon Rondon the scorer for Newcastle United on May 4- Everton’s opener was the first goal scored in a Copa America final since 2011 (Diego Forlan, for Uruguay v Paraguay). What’s nextCONMEBOL’s scattergun approach to scheduling their flagship competition means Brazil must defend their title in Argentina and Colombia next year. read morelast_img read more

Kirk Herbstreit Getting Criticized For What He Said After Ohio State’s Loss

first_imgespn's kirk herbstreit on sportscenterESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit is facing some criticism for what he said (or didn’t say) late in Ohio State’s loss to Purdue on Saturday night. The No. 2-ranked Buckeyes fell on the road to the Boilermakers in blowout fashion, losing by more than 20 points in their first defeat of the season.Herbstreit spoke at length at the end of the game about how clear it was that Ohio State wasn’t prepared. However, the ESPN analyst refused to call out Urban Meyer or any of the Buckeyes’ coaches by name. The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch pointed this out on Twitter.“If you are watching ESPN, there was an interesting moment just now. Kirk Herbstreit spoke thoughtfully about Ohio State not being prepared, the cameras focused on Urban Meyer, but KH never mentioned Meyer by name. So a thought, and this isn’t directed specifically at KH,” he tweeted.“The ecosystem of college football broadcasts reflexively deifies and protects coaches. It is baked into the system. It is the culture of the relationship between rightsholder and college sports and we won’t see lt ever change IMO. It’s not the same for the players.”The ecosystem of college football broadcasts reflexively deifies and protects coaches. It is baked into the system. Vegas’ Prediction For A Michigan-Alabama National Title Game

first_imgUniversity of Alabama head coach Nick Saban talks during the College Football Playoff National Championship Coaches Press Conference.ATLANTA, GA – JANUARY 07: University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban talks during the College Football Playoff National Championship Coaches Press Conference on January 7, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Mike Zarrilli/Getty Images)If the College Football Playoff started today, we’d potentially be looking at a Michigan-Alabama matchup. Alabama and Michigan still need to win their respective conference titles, but if they do, they should both be locks to get in.Of course, if there was any movement in the top four, we might not get a Michigan-Alabama game until the National Championship game itself. With that in mind, odds makers have been calculating what the spread on a title game between the two schools would look like.Who do the early odds favor? Alabama. Pretty overwhelmingly, too.OddsShark projects that if we had a Michigan-Alabama National Championship game, the Crimson Tide would open as a 14-point favorite.Potential National Championship matchup spreads (@betonline_ag):Alabama vs Clemson +8.5Alabama vs Notre Dame +20.5Alabama vs Michigan +14— OddsShark (@OddsShark) November 4, 2018The reasoning makes sense.Despite how good Michigan has looked since their first-half lapse against Notre Dame, Alabama has made mincemeat out of their competition. They just covered a 14-point spread on the road against LSU, winning 29-0 last night.Alabama has yet to beat an opponent by fewer than three touchdowns.Michigan, to their credit, have three-straight wins over Top 25 teams, but they’ve played their games much closer than Alabama have.last_img read more
